Story

You DO know God has humour, right?

Hi, welcome to our virtual coffee shop. Pull up a chair, take the load of your feet. Let’s chat.

Cool. I like that.

So who are you, where you from, what do you do in life?
Mackan Andersson, from Stockholm, Sweden originally, but now exiled to Malmö :o) … I am a standup comedian who also dabbles in writing, and a sometimes-theology-student. Oh – and I have this great kid. And a wonderful wife.

Can I get you a drink? Cappucino, earl grey, dandelion and burdock, pale ale?
A latte, thank you. Sumo-size.

Would you like a doughnut or pastry to go with that?
Do you have a sandwich? I tend to always be hungry…

So, if you had to describe the church/project/experiment/thingy you are currently involved with in one sentence, what would that sentence be?
Erhm… “Salvation Army corps goes discussion group / experiment workshop after 120 years”. Or some such. We tend to eat a lot when we get together, too, so “community” should probably be in there, somewhere, aswell…

Are you an instigator? / new recruit? / have absolutely no recollection of how you got involved?
Been around this particular group for a year now. Loving every minute of it.

What do you value most about being part of it?
I know this sounds really churchy, but… Serving others. Love it. Really!

What excites you most about it?
Seeing people come to Christ (for the first time or the n+1th time…) and having their lives transformed. And having my own life transformed as a result. I never get tired of that.

Has anyone ever turned up out of the blue not knowing what to expect?
What did they say?

If! Oh, yeah, they have… “Is this church? Like… a REAL church?” Often in a quite positive voice, if not always.

Three words that describe your attitude to ‘being church’ in the big wide world: Others. Always Others.

Three words that DON’T:
Overly introspective. Exclusive.

You have this weird dream – you meet Jesus face to face.
Where does it happen, what does he say to you?

It probably happens at a comedy club, that’s where I usually find Him… I guess He will tell me to chill out a bit, stop taking myself so seriously and just enjoy His company more. Then he’ll tell me the best joke I’ve ever heard, and then I’ll wake up, not remembering it.

What’s the big secret you’re itching to share with everyone?
You DO know God has humour, right? That He actually jokes with us to get His points across, at times?

What would your ’emerging church survival kit’ contain?
Kneepads. Lots. We like to pray a lot. Oh, and some kind of stove. In our church/thingy we eat together, a lot. And ext

Kneepads. Lots. We like to pray a lot. Oh, and some kind of stove. In our church/thingy we eat together, a lot. And extension cords. We can’t ever get enough of them.

(I guess someone else would say “water for baptisms” and “communion-stuff” as well. Probably using exactly the term “communion stuff”. Doing it is more important to most, than what we call it).

Anything else you’d like to share with us before you have to rush off?
We can’t keep any safe-and-sound Christians here… We tend to “lose” them all the time to stuff like mission. Will you guys help us to give praise to God for that? Oh, and you can pray that He sends some missionaries THIS way too…

Thanks. Good to see you. Have a good day!
